Game Recap: Apollos win shootout in San Antonio
It went down to the wire, but the Apollos came away with the road win in San Antonio, 37-29 over the Commanders. Keith Reaser sealed the win for the Apollos with an interception return for a touchdown with just over 7 minutes remaining.
Orlando found themselves down 12 points twice during the game, once in each half. The first deficit came as a result of another slow start by the Apollos offense. QB Garrett Gilbert started 0-5 on the first two drives while the defense struggled to stop 3rd downs. The offense was sparked by a deep pass to Charles Johnson for 54-yards, and took off from there. Johnson would continue to be a deep threat throughout the game, ending up with 7 catches for 192 yards.
The Apollos defense struggled to get off the field early on with San Antonio converting their first eight 3rd downs, and gave up 12 early points and a score before halftime. The Apollos defensive woes continued into the 3rd quarter, as RB Kenneth Farrow II kept the Commanders going with a 73-yard rushing performance. Orlando was able to exchange touchdowns for field goals to limit the damage until Gilbert was sacked and stripped with the ball recovered for a Commanders touchdown and another 12 point lead. Then the comeback started.
The play of the night came after Gilbert lead the Apollos to 12 unanswered points in the 4th quarter. The Apollos had just tied it up when Keith Reaser jumped in front of a Logan Woodside pass and took it to the house for the lead. The Apollos converted for 2 extra points to make it 20 unanswered and ultimately the victory.
Next up for the Apollos is the Memphis Express (0-2) at Spectrum Stadium on Saturday, February 23 at 8 pm. Tickets are available at orlandoapollos.com/tickets.
