Apollos stay undefeated in snowy Salt Lake City
The Orlando Apollos overcame slippery conditions to stay undefeated, winning 20-11 over the Salt Lake Stallions. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert continued his league-leading passing attack with 235 yards on 21 completions and a touchdown.
It snowed both before and during the game, making for slippery conditions. Both teams had to adjust to the wet grass, sticking with running play after running play to start the matchup. The game opened up after the halftime break when the field was cleared and made for much more manageable conditions.
Because of the conditions, the Apollos were able to focus more on their rushing attack. The committee approach continued to pay dividends for Orlando, as they outran Salt Lake 128 to 101. Helping in that was a quad injury to Stallions starter Brandon Oliver. He had a game-high 71 yards on 13 carries before exiting.
Charles Johnson was once again the star of the Apollos passing attack, hauling in 9 catches for 105 yards. Rannell Hall also had another solid game, with 4 catches for 57 yards. It was Hall’s second straight game with at least 50 receiving yards.
Next up for the Apollos is a road match-up with currently undefeated Birmingham. The game has been flexed to TNT. The game was previously scheduled to air on Bleacher Report Live. No time change has been announced.
